Georgetown, often mistakenly called Penang, which is the state, not the city, easily takes the winning spot for most awesome place. It is, unsurprisingly, a UNESCO Heritage City. Situated on an island reachable via a long bridge from the mainland, Georgetown is a multicultural, multiethnic town with loads of charm and beauty; walking any of its streets you will be taunted by all sorts of appealing sites.
Whether you are into temples, architecture, history, art, or food, this place has it all. It is walkable, safe, and just the right size. Mostly settled by the Chinese, which now form the primary ethnicity, it also has a large population of Indians of both the Hindu and Muslim faith, as well as Malays who could practice either religious or even Christianity. It all seems quite harmonious. Yesterday there was a big Hindu celebration and procession, but we had to miss it because it began at 6am in our neighborhood, and then moved throughout others.
A well known wrought-iron artist has created dozens of vignettes all over the place, depicting the history of the place and curious facts. It is quite unique work and there are maps that help you follow their location.
I will not write further on this post, but simply let you enjoy some of the pics.
