Two days in one (and a new destination)

On this day we covered the entire southern coast of Iceland. The weather continued to remain on the nasty side, with intermittent rain, high winds, and vast cloud cover. It’s unfortunate because this was to be, hard to believe I know, the most scenic part of the trip.

Most of the sights are not immediately off the road. It takes considerable walking to get to each, and several layers of clothing, including a warm wool hat, and it’s still uncomfortable. The camera does not perform well under these conditions. It takes a lot of adjustments to get good pictures, but under the circumstances, you pretty much just want to point-and-shoot. The results simply do not do the scenery justice, with many photos getting washed out.

Once again, waterfalls stole the day. With all the rain, rivers carry much water and the power of the falls is at its peak.

A pleasant spot to stop for lunch was the town of Vik, where we also visited the small but charming maritime museum.

Adjacent to Vik is Reynisfjara black sand beach, quite dramatic with its pillars of basalt and scenic sea rocks.

We arrived at Keflavik rather late, but in time for dinner. We had a decent night sleep, and woke up bright and early for our visit to Iceland’s primary tourist site, the Blue Lagoon, a spa center where 100 degree water rises to the surface from more than a mile deep into the crust.

The rest of the day was spent either at the airport or on the plane. The kids heading back to the USA, Diane and I extending our European travel to a country we are eager to discover, and where the weather is a bit more bearable.

Good night from Denmark!

Still beautiful photos. It's a rugged country for sure. I'm looking forward to Copenhagen. I was an exchange student in Sweden across the water and we went to Copenhagen a few times. I remember the Mermaid statue and that Tivoli Gardens were quite beautiful. Stay safe.
