Svendborg, Odense, and the Little Mermaid.

We had a very pleasant last day in Denmark. Having figured out a way to get back to Copenhagen using only one ferry, gave us a chance to explore yet another of the country’s major islands, Funen.

The 1 our and 15 minute crossing landed us at the unexpectedly beautiful town of Svendborg, population 28,000. Svendborg has a lovely harbor with many yachts, and walking through its center, on market day, was another real gem.

Approximately 50 kilometers away, lies the city of Odense, Denmark’s third largest. We took ample time walking its streets. It is a city of many statues, pedestrian-only streets, and lovely historical buildings.

Tranquil square in Denmark's third largest city, Odense.

From Odense, it took about 2 hours to get back to the capital. We drove through an interminable bridge spanning the Baltic (18 kilometers!!)

Back in Copenhagen, we treated ourselves to an excellent Italian dinner at Zio e Nonna, and we gave in and went to visit the famous Little Mermaid statue, which wasn’t as insignificant as some have described it. The area where it is set is actually beautiful, with parks, a canal, and a centuries-old fortress where many locals choose to take late afternoon strolls.

We checked in at our new apartment for the night, only ten minutes away from the airport, so we can unhurriedly catch our flight in the morning. It has been another very good trip, albeit on the cool side, but never unbearable. Soon I will post my customary recap, but until then, I hope you will enjoy this new post.
