Retracing our steps

Turnaround time.

We have decided that Puerto Tranquilo should be the furthest point south of our journey.

Having driven (not counting ferries and Bolivia) over 9,500 kilometers, we are mindful of the fact that, every other mile southward will be an additional mile to drive back to Santiago, our point of origin.

As we said in our last post, Puerto Tranquilo was a gem of a find. Somewhat disappointingly, that post was the one seen by the least people. It’s always more exciting to share your experiences with friends and family.

As much as we can, we’ll try to take different roads going back, but because of the narrow shape of Chile, there are not many roads to chose from going in a north-south direction.

Last night we stayed in the largest town in the area, Coyhaique, a pleasant place, with lots of good restaurants and pastry shops.

On the way there we took many a pause along rivers, at small lakesides, just taking in this magnificent reality that is Patagonia. All the while picking up the occasional hitchhiker.

Currently we checked into a modern cabin in the town of La Junta. This time, we were able to get reservations for the ferry. We have three more days to enjoy this part of the world before embarking and tackling the long way back to the capital. Still enjoying, still loving it. Ciao.
