We ended up spending 28 hours in Miami, being bumped, on stand-by from three flights, and ultimately making into a fourth by sheer luck. So, we are now back home, reminiscing about a trip that was even better than expected.
So, what about El Salvador? Small country (the size of Massachusetts), with very friendly people, great coffee (but don't bother with the espresso, it's way too acidic), very affordable, and with amazing scenery. It is not at all dangerous, as some media would have you believe.
But if you are looking for luxury, pampering, and well-kept lawns, El Salvador is not for you. This country lacks in tourist infrastructures. It is the country of its people, and international tourism has not yet arrived. There are no resorts as in the Dominican Republic, no cruise ship stops, no people hassling you to buy their trinkets, and no need to barter. Prices are low and people are just basically very honest. Nobody seems to want to rip you off. What you get is a country where you can simply explore and experience as a local would, and that makes it special. What was surprisingly fine are the country's roads. You can travel practically anywhere on well-paved roadways, although, to reach out-of-the-way spots, you may need a 4-wheel drive.
I would give the country, as a destination, an 8+. If you believe you may want to give it a try, by all means do. It truly is a great place. Stay away from the large cities and enjoy everything else, There is a lot of it. Here is a recap.
