Djerba - Day 1

Hello friends, our second full day in Tunisia was spent entirely in relaxation mode. We spent the morning partly at the pool, and partly walking in the neighborhood around the hotel. We did attempt to visit the local Jewish synagogue, but it closed just before we got there, so we’ll have to save it for another day. Our crepe lunch though, was the yummiest!

So many spices, and the aroma!!

Djerba is quite popular with European tourists, but this is the beginning of the off season, so there aren’t too many around. We did however make friends with a young French couple and a man from Peru with his Iranian bride. We are also staying in a non-tourist part of the island, where peace and tranquility reign, which is just what the proverbial doctor ordered. It’s chill time for us.

After a brief afternoon nap, we drove about 20 minutes to a spot on the west side, a pleasant little cove where sunsets are said to be amazing.

We bathed in the warm waters of the southern Mediterranean, made reservations at a small beach restaurant, but what had promised to be an exceptional setting disappointed everyone because there were low clouds on the horizon that covered the disk of the sun and only a very few scattered clouds picked up some of the colors of the sunset. We’ll have to try it again tomorrow.

Anyway, we are enjoying our time here, everyone is super nice, the food is stellar (our grilled seafood on the beach was mouthwatering), and I’m enjoying speaking French, a language I seldom use.

Our dinner cooking on the grill. Just freshly caught and delicious!

Sorry if the photos leave you disappointed. Today I used my camera for the very first time during the entire trip, having functioned only with my cell phone until now. I would have hoped to give you more, but there will be others. For now this is all; it’s time for a good night sleep. A bientôt!
